We provide education in brick fields, Nepal to support migrant families

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Last October, quite out of the blue, we were invited to join an amazing group of people to go to Nepal to visit the Brick Children School and then to trek to Everest Base Camp. There were just two places left, what an opportunity for us to share this adventure and help support the Brick Children School in the Kathmandu valley. By the following day we had reserved our places with Aspire Adventures and booked our flights to Kathmandu. No going back!

This has been an extremely challenging couple of years for us as a family and this provides an opportunity for us to rebuild through taking part in this adventure and, at the same time, supporting migrant families who work in the brick fields of the Kathmandu valley. They provide education and healthcare for child labourers and literacy and skills training for adults. We are very excited about visiting the school and seeing first hand the amazing work of the children and staff.

Stuart's passion for mountaineering, (and being a bit of a nerd), has led him to read a great deal about Everest but he never thought he would have the opportunity to go to the region. Fiona is going along for the ride! This is now getting very real and although we are both quite fit we have no idea how we will cope at such high altitude.

Just a few interesting statistics. We will start our trek in Lukla (2,829 m) which is the highest point in many Alpine ski resorts. Everest Base Camp is at 5,364 m where the air pressure is 51.7 kPa or about half that at sea level. Stuart is also interested in the solar intensity which will be considerably higher than the sunniest day in the UK, and is hoping to make some measurements, if the brain isn't too confused at that altitude!

Fiona is less enthusiastic about the scientific facts. She is looking forward to walking and socialising with a great group of people and to seeing the spectacular views. It will also be a much needed opportunity for us to take time away from everyday life and reflect on the good times that we have shared as a family and to consider how we can harness the positivity of this adventure to shape our future.
