Bury Hospice provides palliative and end-of-life care to hundreds of residents and their families across Bury. It will cost to run the Hospice this year £4.5million and we raise 87% of this total, but with the support of our community we continue to provide care and services to those who need it.

Story

Anyone who knows me knows I hate exercise.  So to keep me motivated on my journey for a healthier lifestyle I’ve decided to sign up to a virtual walk from Lands End to John O Groats. I have 12 months to walk/jog a whopping 874 miles.  I have chosen to do this for Bury Hospice in memory of Phillip Sykes.

I first met Phil in 2005 when I had the privilege of working with him in my role as a support worker.  He then became a good friend.  Phil had a thirst for life evident in the best social life I have ever known anyone to have. (A tad jealous of if I’m honest).  Phil taught me how to play samba (and some questionable dance moves) and I taught him to ice skate. Just a couple of some of the happy memories we share.  He had a larger than life personality with cheek that knew no bounds 💙 You couldn’t go anywhere without someone recognising Phil.

Sadly Phil was diagnosed with a brain tumour and lost his battle for life in 2020. Bury Hospice visited Phil ensuring he was comfortable and was able to remain at home with his family.
