Story

Shrewsbury School and Churchill’s Hall are proud to announce that the Andrew Grene Foundation www.andrewgrene.org is once again a lead charity for the 2019 Shrewsbury Half Marathon.

The Story

In October 2017, at the invitation of Tim Perutz, the father of a Churchill’s 2017 leaver, Richard Hudson (Housemaster of Churchill’s Hall) and his wife Ruth visited the Andrew Grene High School in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. Tim Perutz is co-founder of the AGHS, which opened in 2011, a year after an earthquake killed an estimated 250,000 people in and around Port-au-Prince. Andrew Grene, Tim’s best friend, was a UN official who was killed, along with numerous other UN staff, by the earthquake when their building collapsed.

The AGHS contains 253 pupils, aged 11-18, drawn mainly from Cite Soleil, a vast and dangerous shanty town on the edge of Port-au-Prince. This amazing school, with the most rudimentary facilities imaginable, is staffed by dedicated local teachers and is a beacon of hope, calm and aspiration in a city still struggling to recover from the devastation caused by the earthquake and the decades of misrule which preceded it.
