We did it!!! Wow – what a day!!

Ciro and I finished the Virgin London Sprint Triathlon without drowning, falling off our bikes or tripping over our laces – well, almost.... Ciro’s initial shock at jumping into the cold, murky depths of the Royal Docks was evident by his colourful language! And I managed a unscheduled “mini detour” on both my bike and run as I struggled to read the directional signs without my recently acquired glasses!

All the way around I was thinking about the many kind words of support and incredibly generous donations made by you all leading up to the event – it made me grit my teeth and give it that much more. The swim went very well, miraculously hopping out amongst the leaders and only having swallowed a few pints of the glorious Thames.

The bike ride was slower but the run all the more elating by the yelling crowds on a lovely, sunny day. We had fantastic support, with Wendy and the girls cheering at every corner and Ciro being applauded by his army of excitable Italian family. By putting my name on the front of my shirt, I was spurred on by the encouragement of hundreds of people shouting “come on Simon!”. So, I finished in 1.41.41 and was truly motivated by the experience; high-fiving fellow Cancer Research triathletes, all proud to be doing our bit to raise money for the great work of this charity.

I've been given a great opportunity to support Cancer Research UK - and I am hoping that you, my friends, family and colleagues will be kind enough to dig deep and sponsor me. I am a rusty veteran of a couple of Triathlon Sprint events - and will be taking part in the London Triathlon Sprint on 22nd September 2012.

As well as raising precious funds for this most worthwhile charity - my motivation is to support a friend's 18 year old son & "virgin" triathlete, Ciro Patalano. But at 30 years my junior I'm not sure who'll be supporting who by the end of it!

I appreciate that many of you are already generous in your charity support - but I'm hoping that you might still sponsor me, every penny really does count towards the incredible research and treatment of the disease that touches so many of us.

The London Triathlon Sprint consists of a 750m swim, followed by a 20km bike ride, finishing with a 5km run around the Docklands, starting and finishing at the Olympic Excel Centre.

So, wish me luck - I am No. 3231 and start at 4.50pm. Thank you very much for your generous support - I'll let you know how we get on.
