Story

good day,

The Tollymore Trail marathon is taking place on the 16th November 2019, and I intend to be on the starting line, and the finishing line. I would really like to raise some money for the charity FORWARD.

Globally, more than 200 million girls and women alive today have experienced genital mutilation. Whilst a further 68 million women are at risk. The practise significantly increases the risk of HIV and death in childbirth amongst multiple damaging effects. Whilst it may seem a problem that is far away, it also affects women in the UK.  As approx. 137,000 girls are the victim of the abuse. The reasons for why practice continues are very diverse, and range from controlling women's sexuality and ensuring their marriageability

FORWARD believes that this social practise is a violation of human rights and must be ended. The charity has made a significant impact since 1985 in the areas around FGM. It provides safe spaces and support, education, and was at the forefront of having FGM criminalised in the UK. Despite the criminalisation of FGM, only one person has been convicted under this law to date. The charity continues to provide specialist FGM services around the world. It demonstrates alternative rites of passage, it works with both men and women and has made critical strides in preventing child marriage in Africa. Currently, FORWARD is at a crossroads setting out a new strategic plan to consolidate the gains of the past and continue to communicate the research.

Any money will be greatly appreciated to help spur me on my way and will mean a lot to every girl and woman FORWARD supports.

Thank you for reading!
