In 2011  Delilah was severely burned in an accident. She sustained 50% full thickness burns. She spent nearly two months in intensive care and we are lucky to still have her in our lives. 

This is her story in her words:

“When I was 17 months old I was burned in a bonfire accident. Half of my body was burned and the doctors put me back together. I spent 2 months in the hospital and I am lucky to be alive. I have had lots of skin grafts and my mummy calls me her patchwork doll. I have had over 30 operations and 1,000 checkups! I know the doctors and nurses very well and they are all very nice. I have two big brothers and they are very protective of me. I like my scars because they make me special. I don’t like having operations because the medicines taste horrible. When I grow up I want to be a burns doctor so I can help other people like me. I have lots of friends, and if I didn’t have burns I would still have those friends. One annoying thing is that some people are mean to me and they call me ugly. Right after it happens I tell someone like a teacher or my parents. Burns camp helps me, and it lets me know that I’m not alone. I’m sharing my story to show that scars are beautiful.”

Supporting Delilah, and all of us, throughout her journey has been the Children's Burns Club. The club provides psychological and social support for dealing with disfigurement and raising awareness about burns. It provides support through activities throughout the year (camps, zoo days etc) for children who have been injured.
