VSO ICS** · 31 January 2020 to 31 December 2020 ·

VSO is an international development organisation that brings people together to share skills, build capabilities, and change lives to make the world a fairer place for all. Everyday, VSO volunteers are working to empower people living in some of the world’s most marginalised communities.

Story

Hello and welcome to my JustGiving page!!!

I am really excited to tell you that I have been selected to volunteer overseas with Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) on an International Citizen Service (ICS) placement.

In 2015, Nepal was devasted by earthquakes of magnitude 7.8 which injured 23,000 people and claimed 9000 lives.

Therefore, in July I will spend ten weeks in a Nepalese community, joining the VSO effort to secure a brighter future for some of the world's most vulnerable people.

VSO has already had a phenomenal impact on recovery efforts, having trained over 300 government officials in affected districts to implement disaster response plans.

What will I be doing?

The motivation behind my placement is to improve the community response to natural disasters, through resilient and sustainable urban growth. My volunteering team will run campaigns focused on a wide range of issues from empowering women, to disaster risk reduction, to the development of youth leadership skills. The work I will be doing will contribute to VSO's overarching 'Inclusive Resilience Project'.

15% of Nepal live under the poverty line. By supporting my fundraising for VSO, you are funding an international development project that delivers unprecedented results in social innovation, inclusive education, and post-disaster recovery, and tackles the world's most extreme poverty.

Where will your money go?

*YOU ARE NOT PAYING TO SEND ME ON HOLIDAY!*

The money I raise will go towards enabling the overall costs of ICS, ensuring they can to continue sending youth volunteers to the developing world to make a lasting difference in disadvantaged communities.

My place on the programme is already paid for - visas, flights, travel and medical insurance, medication, vaccines, food, the lot!  This is because ICS believes in the positive impact of young people and wants to offer them an opportunity to change their lives and the lives of others. All the funds volunteers raise will support all ICS partners to run the programme effectively, always contributing to their vital work.

In order to boost my fundraising effort, I’ll be running the Great Birmingham 10k on the 6th May and you can keep track of how I get on here on my Justgiving page! Those who know me will appreciate what a miracle it will be if I finish it! Any contribution from you will make a huge difference and I am so grateful for any amount.
