I have been on holiday in Madeira – a place I have grown to love – and where I have made friends in the English Church in Funchal ( http://holytrinitychurchmadeira.com/). Holy Trinity Church has served the English-speaking Anglican community in Madeira for 200 years and is embarking on an ambitious programme of repair and renovation for it’s bicentenary.
The Church also cares for “The British Cemetery” which contains the mortal remains of many interesting historical figures, including those of Sarah Bonetta Forbes Davies, a Nigerian Princess who died in Funchal in 1880 from tuberculosis. She was a goddaughter of Queen Victoria. She was a West African Egbado omoba of Yoruba royalty – I come from the Yoruba tribe, and look remarkably like her!!! She has no headstone, though apparently there is a memorial to her in Lagos.
I am running the Hackney Half-Marathon in April and I am inviting sponsorship please for a headstone to be erected for Sarah, and for the bicentenary fund of her Church.
