The reason we have chosen Brighter Futures as our charity is because of a little boy called Oscar.
Oscar was born with a condition called hereditary sphereocytosis, he's the first in either of his blood related families to have the condition so it took a while to diagnose. This blood condition means that Oscar is frequently anaemic and jaundiced, he also has an enlarged spleen, which could need removing when he is a little bit older. He also has a high chance of developing gallstones which could result in more surgery for him. Treatment for oacar at the moment involves frequent blood transfusions when his haemoglobin levels drop to a level that he can not function properly on. At the age of 2 he has already had 7 transfusions. When he gets to this point he is lethargic and can sleep for up to 15 hours at a time, pale and jaundiced, has a low appetite, gets very short of breath with simple tasks and  is simply not his normal happy self. It's at this point that he will go to see the staff on the paediatric assessment unit for a blood test and then 9 times out of 10 will then have a blood transfusion.

The staff on the children's unit are always extremely busy but despite this always have a smile and time to calm and reassure Oscar and myself. There's always the same familiar faces of the staff and patients and we'd love to support them through the brighter futures charity
