Story

Thanks for taking the time to look at our page. We're raising money for Teesside RAG.

Student Leaders and Volunteers at Teesside University Students’ Union (TUSU) will be encouraging students and staff to talk about mental health and raising funds for the charity Mind as part of Raise and Give (RAG) Week from Mon, 18th November to Mon, 25th November. The week of events and activities led by Welfare Officer James Carroll, Student Activities Officer Jodie Bird and Welfare Rep Ashley Mehnert includes raffles, bake sales and fancy dress in the Students’ Union plus bag packing in local supermarkets and braving the cold weather for sponsored swims in the River Tees and at Saltburn. James will also be co signing the “Time To Change” pledge with Teesside University’s Director of Human Resources Juliet Amos which underlines both organisations commitment to greater awareness of mental health issues amongst staff and efforts to continue stamping out discrimination against people with mental health issues.

James Carroll said: “The week is obviously about having fun while raising funds for a great cause on one level but there’s a really important point underpinning it....It’s thought around one in four people in the UK will suffer from a mental health problem during their lifetime so it’s vital that we play our part in ensuring both students and staff here at the University feel comfortable talking about mental health issues and know what they can do if they need help and support. We’re all human, we all have periods of stress, depression or anxiety...we just want to make sure we’re doing all we can to make sure people know there’s no shame in it.”

Teesside University is also running a series of events for staff and students to mark Mental Health Awareness Week including drop in support sessions and film screenings, full details available at www.tees.ac.uk/mentalhealth

So if you can spare a few quid, please sponsor us to raise some much needed cash for the excellent mental health charity, Mind!
