We use the power of community to help torture survivors heal

Story

Where the money you raise could go:

£1,450 would pay for all therapeutic and casework support for a torture survivor for a year, enabling a member to take great steps towards rebuilding their life in exile

£150 pays for a group therapy session for up to ten members to deal with the legacy of torture

£40 pays for a community meal after a group gardening session - so that our members can come out of isolation and find enjoyment in life again

£20 pays for an hour on-to-one casework appointment, to help someone prevent homelessness or find a lawyer

£5 pays for a member to travel to a therapy or casework session

The runners story:

We are a 10 person strong team with a serious case of the Runs. Smashing 10k runs that is. We are made up all running levels, from experienced runners to those of us whose only experience consists of running to late trains or last orders at the bar. We plan to brave our hibernating winter feet to train for this run in March. Many of us are pushing ourselves to do a longer run than we have ever done before.

Theresa works for Room to Heal. When she suggested the run to her friends, the rest of the Runs team quickly formed as it was an easy decision to support this charity. We know how brilliant they are at helping people to rebuild their lives after experiencing the worst of human cruelty, and whilst continuing to live with extreme deprivation in the UK.

Many of us are immigrants ourselves to London, and having a welcoming community of others helped us immensely to have the courage to go forth in this new place. Room to Heal offers this support for asylum seekers and refugees in exile.

Please help us raise money for this great cause and encourage our foray into the cold to train!

Thank you all so much.

Room to Heal is a grass-roots therapeutic charity supporting people who have fled persecution, torture and indefinite detention at the hands of the state.

------

'I was a dead soul in a living body, Room to Heal gave me back hope in life.'

Room to Heal provides therapeutic and material assistance to refugees and asylum seekers. Since 2007, we have developed a holistic assistance model shaped by the needs of those we have helped. We offer long-term support, tailored to each individual’s need and aspiration, standing by our beneficiaries as they rebuild their lives and integrate in a meaningful way. Our approach focuses on human connection. We offer people a place of belonging, helping them withstand the many challenges they face.

Our community, based in Islington, is composed of people from 30 countries, of all ages and religions, united by a common belief in humanity and respect for human rights. Many are journalists, human rights defenders and LGBT activists with a burning desire to tell the world what is happening in their country, yet without the means to do so. We are a small, grassroots charity operating in a difficult funding environment and are seeking to raise £30k for 2018 to continue our vital work.

We sincerely thank you for any support you can offer.
