Story
Hi guys,
I’ve decided to challenge myself by running my first ever half marathon in order to help raise awareness and vital funds for the Muir Maxwell Epilepsy Centre (MMEC) at the University of Edinburgh.
I feel very strongly about this charity because it is committed to investigating the causes of childhood epilepsy. The MMEC aims to develop new treatments and public health strategies in order to help children and families affected by epilepsy. An estimated 1% of children worldwide have epilepsy and in up to 70% of all cases the cause
is unknown. The Centre conducts vital research in this field which helps progress the understanding and treatment of childhood epilepsy. For more information on MMEC and their most recent projects please visit http://www.muirmaxwellcentre.com/......
As you may or may not know, epilepsy is a horrific condition to live with and affects 70 million people worldwide. Between seizures, people tend to appear to others entirely "well" -meaning that they may struggle to receive the recognition needed for support required despite living a tough rollercoaster life between seizures and wellness then back to seizures. On a day they have a seizure they may not be able do anything else to support themselves.
I have committed to raising £500 by running this year’s Edinburgh Half Marathon on the 28th May and I am asking for your invaluable support. All funds raised via this page will benefit the MMEC directly by taking the research on childhood epilepsy a step closer to developing new medical treatments and helping those affected by this condition. Every penny counts! All donations will be highly appreciated by MMEC and the children and families they help.
I have about 3 months to train and prepare for the 21.1 kilometre (13.1-mile) run. Having never run for longer than 20 minutes on the treadmill in my life... As you can imagine I will find this quite a tough challenge! However, this good cause makes it all worth it! Wish me luck!
Many thanks in advance for your kind generosity!
Best wishes,
Val
