Story

187 miles, 24-hour “Coast 2 Coast 2019” Challenge: St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay

Wolverhampton Grammar School has run an annual Coast 2 Coast challenge for over 20 years. It involves a group of Year 10 students (11 in total) running the famous Wainwright route of 187 miles from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay as a tag team in just 24-hours. This year’s Coast 2 Coast challenge will start at 7am on Saturday 25th May from St Bees, with the aim of arriving in Robin Hood’s Bay by 7am on Sunday 26th May 2019.

In preparation for their challenge, the students undertake 16 weeks of extreme training to prepare them. Members of staff support the students during their training and the challenge itself. Parents also support the students from along the route.

This year’s team is made up of Year 10 students from Wolverhampton Grammar School: Oliver, Cian, Rohan, Joshua, Charlie, Zac, Kate, Katie, Liz, Anya and Beth who are supported and coached by a number of School staff including Mr Cooney, Mr French, Miss Bowater, Miss Bradley and Mrs Harris.

Along with the sense of personal achievement for the students in completing this challenge, each year the event raises thousands of pounds for a charity, which is chosen by the students taking part.

For 2019, the students have decided to support Sparks: a charity funding ground breaking research into a wide range of conditions affecting children. These include childhood cancers, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, infant brain damage, club foot and the risks associated with premature birth. Their pioneering projects are carried out at leading hospitals and universities throughout the UK, making significant contributions to breakthroughs and new treatments.

Further details about Sparks can be found at the following weblink:

We hope that you are able to support our Coast 2 Coast 2019 Challenge, and thank you in anticipation of your sponsorship. Along with the personal achievement for competing this rewarding challenge, the students hope to raise as much money as they can for Sparks.

If you have any queries regarding the event, please do not hesitate to contact the School on 01902 421326.

With many thanks
