Welshpool Firefighter Russell Pugh donated his kidney to his son, Joseph earlier this year.
Joseph and his dad are now on the mend with the 11-year-old travelling to hospital in Birmingham three times a week. Joseph was born with chronic renal failure and for the last two years Russell has been preparing to donate his kidney after he was identified as a match.
Russell has described how he did not think twice about going through with the procedure to aid his son’s quality of life.
He said: “I have had fun in my life and I just wanted to give him a chance to have fun in his and do things. It has been a long process and it has been tough on Joseph, but he is a little fighter.
“When it was all over I was relieved that it had been a success, but it is a long process. The operation is done, but we will go back regularly for two or three times a week and he will visit over periods of time for the rest of his life.”
Crew members from Welshpool Fire Station will be running a series of events this year raising money for Birminghams Children Hospital who are taking care of Joe.
