Story
Living with kidney disease can be a very worrying and stressful time not only for the patient, but their family members too.
The Young Adult Kidney Fund, based at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, supports young adults aged between 16-30 years, who are living with kidney disease - helping them make the transition from the paediatric service to the adult service as smoothly as possible. We are one of only a handful of services in the UK which supports young adults in this way.
Being a young adult and living with kidney problems is very challenging. With your generosity we can rise to the challenge of empowering young adults living with kidney disease to have the same opportunities in life as their peers.
We provide information and support about lots of different things including education, employment, finance, housing, childcare and advice on the daily challenges of living with kidney disease.
Our fund helps young adults by subsidising social events to enable them to meet up, providing young adult-friendly facilities and information leaflets for our dedicated clinic, getting young adults involved in the Transplant Games in the UK and abroad, subsidising individual exercise programmes, training peer supporters and providing a specific 'moving-on' group to help 25-30 year olds to start coping on their own.
