Story

At 35 years old, I am 14 years free from drugs and alcohol. May 30, 2007 is the most significant day of my life and that of my family and friends. The peace of mind, as well as the commitment and discipline required in distance running, is a vital part of my personal mental health/recovery. Having 3 small children, a wife, a career, people I help in a 12-step program, and a commitment to my church, finding a moment to turn my mind off has always been a struggle. Running has been a powerful solution I have found over the last 5 years.

While I got clean before the start of the Herren Project, I have personally seen the positive impact that this organization has had in my community from scholarships to addicts in desperate need as well as the amazing work done to de-stigmatize addiction.

I have lost more than 20 people from addiction in my life, a staggering # if you think of it. When I run I will draw strength from the memory of all of them, but specifically, I will draw from the strength of my relationships of my lost friends: Evan, Jarryd, Johnny and Victor as well as the dozens of acquaintances gone along the way.

Last year I achieved a personal goal of mine to run a marathon (albeit a virtual one) by running Boston and now I am back to do Chicago hopefully in front of a crowd. Things have only got worse for addicts since the pandemic with overdose + relapse rates, if I can also raise money for a cause that is so important to me, it seems selfish not to take advantage of the opportunity.

Long term recovery is possible and addicts can not only stay clean but thrive, becoming productive, honest and hardworking contributing members of society! Thank you for helping me help others!
