Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am running in memory of my son Andrew Thomas Maxwell and raising funds for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit through the Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity.

Andrew was born on the 8th of October 2019 by emergency c-section at 34 weeks as the doctors weren't happy with his reduced movements. He was born in the Royal Alexandra Hospital and Paisley at 1.30 a.m and blue lighted by ambulance to The Royal Hospital for Children within a few hours due to breathing problems. Over the next 22 days we had many ups and downs with Andrew's progress and more tests than you could imagine - including over 12 lumbar punctures! On day 21 he went from a peaceful, always sleeping baby to fighting against his breathing machine and became very distressed. He still hadn't even opened his eyes. My partner and I had to make the decision that no one ever wants to be faced with - to remove life support for their child. We agreed that, given Andrew was in pain and would never get any better that the most humane thing would be to let him go peacefully. He died on the 30th October 2019 in his daddy's arms due to a currently unknown, extremely rare genetic condition despite my fiancee and I being healthy and well.

The care we received from the moment we arrived at the RHC NICU, until even after he had passed, the care we received was beyond amazing.

For example, Laura who was his nurse for the first 3 nights, called in on her days off to see how he was getting on, and Sayeed who looked after him for his final few days and while he passed away could not have been any more attentive to us. There are too many to name individually but the care we received from each and every on of Andrew's nurses and doctors is appreciated beyond words. They made so many memories for us including videos & hand and feet casts and prints.

I have never run before in my life, however I would like to make some sort of positive come from Andrew's short life and that for me is raising funds to help other babies in the NICU. Also Andrew's father and I are getting married in March 2021 and I need to lose the baby weight to slim back in to my wedding dress.

I have no doubt this 5k will be tough but I'll have my mum with me for support and will keep going for my baby boy every step of the way!
