Watch our short video explaining what this campaign is all about.
Following a brutal armed conflict, women have achieved important commitments in the Colombian Peace Accord between the Government and the FARC guerrilla.
Help us tackle systemic gender discrimination by advancing the effective participation of women in the implementation process of the Colombian Peace Accord!
Your donation will enable ABColombia to organise a high-level conference and bring over Colombian women to speak directly with policy-makers. The aim is to obtain specific international commitments that will ensure the implementation of the gender-focused agreements.
ABColombia is raising money for an international conference in London with Colombian women representing different sectors of society, including ethnic minorities. The women will lead discussions with a range of policy-makers and experts from the UK, EU, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and Colombia.
The conference will
- encourage international funders supporting the implementation of the Peace Accord to ensure that the gender focus is fully implemented.
- address ways the International Community can strengthen its monitoring role in the implementation of the gender commitments.
- share the extraordinary achievements gained by women in the Colombian Peace Accord, which can help those engaged in other peace processes around the world.
Women and girls have suffered disproportionately in Colombia’s armed conflict. Gender violence and systemic discrimination against them remain a reality. The Peace Accord signed between the Colombian Government and the FARC guerrilla in 2016 provides a unique opportunity to transform patriarchal values and build a lasting peace for women. However, there is fierce opposition that threatens the implementation of the agreements that benefit women and girls.
Why in London?
The conference will be held in London to raise the international impact and to take advantage of the UK coordinating issues related to women, peace and security at the UN Security Council and leading on "Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict".
Colombian women's organisations have confirmed that the international support we hope to forge through the conference in London will be essential to enhance their efforts to achieve a full and effective implementation of the gender-focused agreements.
What will happen after the conference?
Based on the outcomes of the conference, ABColombia will produce a report together with the Colombian women activists. The report will provide concrete policy recommendations for the international community and the Colombian Government on how to ensure the Peace Accord is implemented with a gender focus. The recommendations will include monitoring, gender equality, women’s effective participation in the implementation process and the prevention of violence against women in Colombia. Funds raised for ABColombia are transferred via CAFOD, which acts as the host agency for ABColombia.
The conference report will be made available in English and Spanish to make it accessible for a broad range of stakeholders, including the governments of the UK and Colombia, the diplomatic community and civil society organisations.
Your donation for the conference will therefore have a long-term impact for women in Colombia.
ABColombia is the joint advocacy project of a group of five leading British and Irish organisations with programmes in Colombia: CAFOD, Christian Aid UK & Ireland, Oxfam GB, SCIAF and Trócaire. Amnesty International and Peace Brigades International (PBI) are observers. ABColombia members and observers work with around 100, mainly grassroots, partner organisations in Colombia.
ABColombia has been working with women's organisations throughout the Peace Talks to support ethnic leaders and civil society organisations to achieve a gender focus in the Peace Accord. Now that women's rights have been addressed in the Peace Accord, we are now supporting them to ensure implementation by providing access to national and international decision-making forums.
