Story
Ten years ago I celebrated my 40th Birthday by cycling from Land's End to John O'Groats with a support vehicle but riding alone. I was really looking forward to the Highlands of Scotland but by the time I got there I was so tired and running so far behind that I just wanted to go home! I decided then and there to do the ride again, the other way around and not alone! For my 50th birthday ride I am joined by 4 friends and a support vehicle.
The riders will leave Brighton on the early evening of 17th August to take a sleeper train to Inverness and then on to Thurso where we will meet our support vehicle and bikes. On the evening of the 18th we will ride to John O'Groats and back to Thurso a short 45 mile round trip with a detour to Dunnet Head, the furthest point North of mainland UK. We will arrive at land's End on Sunday, 2nd September after covering around 1200 miles.
Although I have not worked with adults with learning disabilities for many years, I have continued to feel that disabled people should be treated the same as others and with the same respect, especially with regards to late evening social activities. I have always had an interest in Carousel's projects and last year I completed Carousel's volunteer training course and since then I help out regularly at various projects such as Rock House, House Band, The Blue Camel Club and Oska Bright. I feel that people with learning disabilities have a lot to offer and should be encouraged to be creative as much as possible.
