 Just 2 weeks before her death, Rachel made donations to this charity and had sent a letter to the European Commissioner to raise awareness of the inhumane transportation conditions of working animals. For millions of people around the world, owning working animals that earns them a living can mean the difference between having food on the table or going hungry. SPANA works in North Africa and the Middle East where life for working animals, and the families that rely on them, is unremittingly hard. Donkeys, horses and mules are the equivalent of a car - providing their owners with the only means of ploughing fields, transporting goods to market and carrying water home from the well. People still depend on animals for their own survival, but if their animal becomes ill or is injured, they are often just too poor to afford the necessary treatment. SPANA provides a lifeline for these animals and owners, providing vital veterinary care, advice for owners and education for children – all free of charge.
