We, Max and Charlotte, have been volunteering at Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary for the last month, in Freetown, Sierra Leone. 

Max has been working along side of Pastor these last 4 weeks. Pastor is the head of maintenance of Tacugama. He knows exactly what is where on site, which problems arise (for example the water system has been broken a lot lately) and how to fix them. It has been said that Tacugama couldn't function properly if it wasn't for his knowledge and skills. He and Max make a great team and the progress they are making together is so fun to watch!! 

A reoccurring issue is that he unfortunately does not always have the right tools to do his job. He has a room dedicated to his tools and materials, but sometimes when things are borrowed they break or don't get returned at all. The last month they have been using Max's toolbox, which we brought in the car, for fixing everything around Tacugama! 

We want Pastor to be able to do his work properly and therefore we have decided to buy a proper toolbox for him! One that is only for him and that only he has access to, so that tools don't go missing and can be kept in a good state, so that he can do his job without the search for tools, or ones that don't work or are broken.

Some background information about Tacugama in general: Tacugama doesn't only rescue and rehabilitate chimpanzees, to give them a chance to go return to the wild. They also work on other important projects like (1) community conservation, with rural communities towards achieving sustainable natural resource management and wildlife conservation, (2) environmental education, which aims to increase sensitization and environmental awareness in primary schools, and give students the life skills to solve the environmental issues of the future, (3) field research in various regions of Sierra Leone and (4) law enforcement by doing patrols to protect the forest and confiscating chimpanzees.
