Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My story:

I am 74 and have had annual PSA tests (a simple blood test) for many years. The results were always low but slowly rising. This aroused suspicion and a biopsy confirmed I had early prostate cancer. I am now monitored with PSA tests and MRI scans and I am lucky that so far, 5 years down the line, intervention/treatment has not been necessary. I would like to spread the message regarding the importance of regular PSA testing from 45 years onwards to help establish early diagnosis and treatment where necessary as this significantly reduces the complications of treatment and of the early deaths from this cancer.

Prostate Cancer Research is progressing well but is always hamstrung by financial constraints. The next major breakthrough may be just around the corner waiting for that little push.

This ride is a classic, about 1000 miles (with a lot of hills 🥴) but some stunning scenery. Friend Rob - with  similar medical history and age -is riding with me and I hope to have friends and family join me for parts of the ride and am supported by Rotarian friend Martin helping with ‘logistics’ such as my gear, somewhere to stay and moral support (? ordering the beer & running the bath😏). I had a knee replacement last year which slowed me up a bit so I have had to to work hard at the training, but that seems to have paid off. Rob has had two knee replacements!!  We both agree that our cycling has kept our  muscles good enough to enable a rapid recovery. - on the bike (cycle trainer) at 6 weeks post-op.
