We provide opportunities and support to improve the lives of inner city children

Story

In April 2019 I completed the London Marathon, my one and only marathon and was very proud to get round in a time a little over 4 hours. 2020 / 21 has been difficult for businesses and charities alike. At a time, charity support is needed more than ever, the ability to fundraise to maintain this support has been very challenging. Many events cancelled or postponed impacting on vital revenue streams. The postponement of some events has given me the opportunity to target finding my running legs and attempt my 3 - 3 - 3 challenge…. What is this challenge?

3 Running Events in 3 Cities over 3 Consecutive weekends

Sunday 27th March 2022 – Cardiff Half Marathon

Sunday 3rd April 2022 – London Landmarks Half Marathon (LLHM)

Sunday 10th April 2022 – Brighton Marathon

For me, this is an opportunity to continue my support for a charity close to my heart that I respect and value the work that they do. Please help me to support this amazing charity

Here is a little about my links to the charity and why it means so
much to me.

I have followed the work that they are doing in Nechells, Birmingham and believe that the philosophy, activities, and support for the community to be amazing and inspiring. Growing up in Nechells I am only too aware of the challenges that face youths and their families. My connection to John who runs the charity dates back almost 4 decades. Before John, his parents Cliff & Lin and his wife, Jan’s parents Doug and Cynth were thinking of ways to help the Nechells community. Unfortunately, John’s father lost his battle with Cancer over 30 years ago. As a result, John, still a young adult stepped up taking a lead in the youth activities which culminated in setting up the charity free@last in 1999. Following the demolition of the old centre in June 2016, construction of a new purpose-built centre started, the build was not without its challenges. Following the completion of construction at the end of 2017, the new centre opened at the start of 2018. This new centre was built to create a centre which is core to help the Nechells community and their future. There are many ideas and initiatives that free@last carry out with the ultimate aim of reducing and eliminating poverty in Nechells.

In October 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, the world lost another of these amazing people, Doug. His energy and enthusiasm and support for Nechells will never be forgotten. His love and energy for the community of Nechells will never be forgotten.

I cannot explain the influence that John and his family had on me, simply put, it was so positive and helped me develop into who I am today. I have been relatively lucky in securing work that I enjoy which has helped me see parts of the world that I would never have dreamed of as a child growing up in Nechells. Whether it be holidays to Tenby with a trip to Caldey Island, fishing trips, table tennis, football, my first concert……the list goes on. I have a lot to be thankful for. This was done because it was the right thing and not for recognition or reward.
This is what was done to help me along with having lifelong friends. free@last continue to do what is right for the community of Nechells on an individual basis, acknowledging that everyone and every situation is different which requires constantly adapting to the needs ensuring no broad-brush approach.

The support never stops and when my little sister unexpectedly passed away on 28th November 2005, both sides of John & Jan’s family were there to support when we said goodbye.

John continues to focus on and, works tirelessly to help the Nechells community. The ethos of the family can now be seen through the amazing work that free@last are doing. Please help me to help free@last continue the amazing / inspiring work they are doing in Nechells.
