Me and my team at Allen Build & Development Ltd are Climbing the Three Peaks Challenge on the 13th April to raise money for The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit within Southampton General Hospital, which provides specialist care to premature and unwell newborn babies.  

When my wife gave birth to our first child Jacob, he had a very turbulent birth which involved him being resuscitated by specialists for the first half an hour of his life.  he was really poorly and spent the first 5 days of his life on this unit. 

This was a very worrying and emotional time for us, but the care Jacob received and the support we were given from the team at the Neonatal Unit was second to none, which we were so thankful for.

It is one of the largest units of its kind in the country, treating around 900 babies each year, from Southampton and surrounding areas. Babies have survived as young as 23 weeks, with some of them only weighing 460g/1lb. Picture a baby smaller than the size of your hand. Imagine the skill needed to care for and treat something that size.

We and so many other families are really appreciative of the specialist unit and the care they provide.

Money raised could go towards new equipment, more resources for families, improvements to parent facilities or additional staff training. All of which could help to improve the unit even further, ensuring babies and families receive the best care possible.
