My mum, who has always appeared fit and healthy for her age was recently diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis after a short period of shortness of breath and needed urgent open heart surgery for a valve replacement and bypass grafts. 

This came as a bit of a shock to all of us, but the surgery took place within 2 weeks of her diagnosis and she was discharged home after just 5 days!! She still has a long road to a full recovery but we are all just so grateful that she has been given the opportunity to have a prolonged and healthier life, because without the surgery her outlook was pretty grim! 

It is only because of the research carried out by The British Heart Foundation that pioneering surgery like valve replacement and bypass grafts are now fairly commonplace, and their ongoing  research will continue to save many lives. 

I am therefore trying to do my bit to give a little bit back to this great charity and had already entered the 10k before her diagnosis, along with my daughter Emily (we did our one and only 10k run pre-Covid 3 years ago!) and a friend and work colleague, Laura who will be running her first 10K! Our team name is “Reluctant but Running” because, quite frankly, that’s how we feel about running a 10K!! 😂
