Story

Thank you so much for visiting my page. My beautiful Mum died in October 2017. It has been a tough 18 months from secondary diagnosis to Mum receiving end of life care in our local hospice. Throughout Mum being ill, she showed such courage and bravery in the face of a life limiting disease. I'm running the London Marathon, in memory of Mum, to wade through the ocean of grief and to dig deep and remember how resilient she was and how I can be too when I set myself a challenge. If you knew Mum you would know how truly special and extraordinary she was. Mum was a specialist cancer nurse and devoted the majority of her nursing life caring for her patients and their families. Her funeral was testament to how remarkable she was and I spoke with so many people about how she had helped them through their cancer diagnosis. I don't think I will ever know how many lives she touched. I feel running the marathon and fundraising would be such a tribute to a much loved and treasured person. Mum said that having children was her proudest achievement and I want to be able to say that my proudest achievement was completing a marathon in memory of Mum.

I’m also supporting a charity close to my heart, Sarcoma UK,  it's the only cancer charity in the UK focused on all types of sarcoma. Sarcoma is a cancer of the bone and soft tissue. It is one of the hardest to diagnose, and difficult to treat. My Mum had a Chondrosarcoma and before her diagnosis I didn't know much about this type of cancer and since then have realised how others too are unaware of what Sarcoma is. However, by running and fundraising I'm hoping to make a difference and change this. By donating to my page, you will fund vital research projects looking for better treatments. Your donation will also raise awareness of the symptoms of sarcoma to help patients get an early diagnosis, and ensure everyone has access to specialist advice.

I found out I had a place in the marathon whilst Mum was in the hospice. It was such a bittersweet time but I remember her saying 'Well...you better bloody do it!' Every time I run I have those words in my head. So I am. Thank you for visiting my page, reading a little of my story and your donations and support. I will be doing other fundraising events from the New year through to April too and will keep you updated. Also, please take a look at my Instagram account amy_fletcher_87 for updates!
