We support people affected by brain injury to lead healthy, social & fulfilling lives.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Many of us read claim files which detail horrific injuries people have
endured from actions that are their own fault or someone else’s but the
consequences are often the same...lifelong and impacting themselves and those around them.  Fortunately, not many of us have first-hand experience of the day-to-day challenges that they face but a close friend of mine, Lucy, and her husband Campbell have sadly experienced just that.

A few weeks after proposing, Cam was out in the City in June 2013 and
after one too many (something I’m sure many of us can relate to!) he fell from height near Fenchurch Street station, suffered from a traumatic brain injury, various orthopaedic injuries and was in a coma for three weeks.  The brain injury means Cam is unlikely to ever work again, can be aggressive and unpredictable with no social filter and requires full-time care which Lucy and her friends and family provide most of, with the help of social services.  Cam was in residential care for over three years.

Headway provide specialist support and services to survivors and their
families.  They brought Lucy and Cam together with others who had been through similar struggles which was a real help, particularly for Lucy given there was no insurer-funded care or rehab available to them.

So this Saturday (6th Jan) I begin the long slog up Kilimanjaro which, at 5895m, is the tallest freestanding mountain in the world (higher than Everest Base Camp!) but is nothing compared to the long slog Lucy and Cam continue to go through.

I’m hoping to smash my target for such a worthy cause so any donation, big or small, is greatly appreciated (all donations go to the charity and not to cover the cost of the trip).

A big thank you to all of those who have kept me company during
training xx
