In February 2013, I will be joining an eight man exploratory mountaineering expedition to Antarctica. The expedition is being led by Stephen Venables (www.stephenvenables.com), an experienced Everest climber and Skip Novac (www.pelagic.co.uk), a distinguished round the world skipper. It will involve sailing, climbing and skiing in extreme Antarctic conditions.

We set sail from Argentina at the beginning of February in Skip’s 75 ft sailing yacht Pelagic and sail across the Drake Passage past Cape Horn. The boat will form the base camp for multiple excursions into the Antarctica Peninsular.

The group will attempt to ascend virgin peaks and to open up new routes on other climbed mountains. Our team will be entirely self sufficient relying on skis and foot to travel on the Peninsular when away from the boat.

The expedition is part of Stephen Venable’s celebration of his first ascent up the East Face of Everest 25 years ago and the 60th year anniversary of the 1 ascent of Everest in 1953.

I would like to use the opportunity of the expedition to both raise the profile and raise funds for bursaries. For every £150 raised a bursary will enable a young person to have their own opportunity for outdoor adventures through The Bowles Rocks Trust.

The Bowles Rocks Trust supports a wide variety of young people with disabilities, special needs and from disadvantaged backgrounds, many from inner cities, regardless of their background, the opportunity to experience outdoor activities.
