Event: Swimathon 2019, from 29 March 2019 to 31 March 2019
Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie are calling on the nation to get down to the pool for Swimathon 2019 - thousands of swimmers, two great causes, one big charity challenge.

Story

I set myself the challenge of swimming 2.5k at the 2019 Swimathon on 30th March – the World’s largest annual fundraising swim.

I am hoping to raise lots of money for Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie. I have had friends and family affected by cancer and wanted to do something to help all the people who have sadly experienced this illness, and wanted to help raise money for important research. I am swimming in memory of my Grandma who I was never able to meet and this is for her.

Cancer Research UK, the world’s leading cancer charity is dedicated to saving lives through research. They don’t receive any government funding for their work, so their progress is all thanks to the support of people like you.

Marie Curie provides expert care, guidance and support for people living with any terminal illness, and their families. Around 2,100 Marie Curie Nurses work day and night, in people’s homes all over the UK, providing hands-on care to people when they need it most.

Together we can really make a difference.

£100 covers the cost of giving one patient the

Cytospongetest and analysing their results in the lab
to diagnose early stages of oesophageal cancer.

£270 covers the cost of a trial for a day to find the best
treatment for children with a rare type of leukaemia,
whose cancer has come back after treatment.

£70 pays for two slide sheets, used by Marie Curie Nurses to move people with a terminal illness safely in bed.

£260 will cover the cost of two day-therapy sessions

for a patient at a Marie Curie Hospice.
