On Thursday 5 December 2013 girls from Nottingham Girls’ High Junior School will release a single to honour the memory of their friend Rose Whittle (10) who died on 25 March this year following a long and courageous battle with cancer. The girls are hoping to raise money for E39 the Children’s Cancer Ward at Nottingham Children’s Hospital, a place which over the last two years, Rose regarded as home.

From being diagnosed with cancer in May 2011 through to her sad death in March 2013, despite facing painful treatment and at times living in hospital for weeks, Rose attended school whenever she could and loved to be involved in as many activities as possible, from Sports Day and school performances to singing at a party for elderly people.  After Rose’s tragic death her friends put together a beautiful book of poems, memories and artwork - their way of remembering such a bright and inspirational girl. Rose’s classmate Sofia Kiani, commented, “Rose was so jolly, I never realised how very ill she was. Rose was a very good friend to me; she made me laugh”.

The money raised will go to the Nottingham University Hospitals Charity for the E39 Children’s Cancer ward refurbishment.  The ward is being completely refurbished but more funds are needed to make the ward a more homely and comfortable environment for the children and their families.

Rose maintained a zest for life throughout her illness and raised money to help other children.  In March 2012 she left her hospital bed to run the Sport Relief mile, and was awarded with a Gold Blue Peter badge for her courage.  She was inspired to set up a JustGiving site and organise a fundraising relay “Rose’s Razzle Dazzle Relay” in October2012 raising more than £14,000 for E39 the Children’s Oncology ward.  Rose also won a WellChild Award as for being an “Inspirational Child” which was awarded by Prince Harry, the patron of the charity.

Rose put more in and got more out of her 10 short years than most would achieve in 100.  Rose was a ray of sunshine who lit up the lives of all who knew her, her light will shine in our hearts forever.  xxxxx
