Story

Dear Friends,

This will be my second challenge after Mongolia in 2018 to help raise awareness and empower underprivileged women. believe that ‘to whom much is given, from him much is expected.’ It motivates me to help others who are in need and to realise that there are opportunities, both big and small, in which my efforts can make a difference when combined with the capabilities and energy of others.

I am really looking forward to experiencing the ethereal beauty of Iceland’s landscapes and terrain with the Her Planet Earth team (https://www.herplanetearth.com/). Together we aim to trek 80km in four days. There will be physical and mental barriers to test as we forgo the many modern comforts that the majority of us take for granted. I have already begun my training, which includes something new to me - cold water Swimming (more like dips for now!).

My expedition is entirely self-funded which means 100% of the funds raised on Challenge Iceland 2019 will go directly to UN Women UK (https://www.unwomenuk.org) and towards projects that help underprivileged women affected by climate change. The focus will be on the economic empowerment of women in rural areas of Asia, notably in Bangladesh, Nepal and Vietnam - supporting the belief that women have the right and the need to be at the forefront of efforts to deal with climate change.

Every dollar counts and it starts here:

USD50 - could provide a series of leadership and self-esteem workshops for women and girls to give them the skills and confidence to respond to these climate risk challenges.

USD100 - could help towards setting up a livelihood project that empowers women business leaders in agriculture to manage their business in at-risk areas.

USD1000 - could allow UN women UK to work with governments to develop Post-Disaster Needs Assessments to inform disaster recovery strategies and national disaster management planning.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my statement, and for your kind support and donations.

All my very best,

Barbara xx
