Story

I am planning to cycle 940 miles from Lands End to John O’Groats with my brother David Joy to raise £1,000 to improve the Children’s Ward 130 at Hull Royal Infirmary where I work.

I have been a nurse for 36 years and have loved my nursing career caring for patients.  Since 2007, I have worked across the Children’s Wards at Hull Royal Infirmary. Having taken semi-retirement from January, I have decided to take on board this epic cycle challenge to raise funds for Ward 130 where we look after children from birth to 16 years.

Between 18th June and 5th July, I am cycling 940 miles unsupported, from Lands End to John O’Groats with my brother David.  I am aiming to raise £2,500 to improve the ward environment for patients, and raise funds for extra toys and entertainment equipment to brighten young patients’ days.

We have a tough schedule ahead of us and will be camping each night along the way!

Colleagues, children and their families on the ward are excited for me to take part in this challenge and will be monitoring our progress each day. They will use a gigantic map of the United Kingdom on the wall in the ward and the children will be plotting where we have reached.  They will also learn about where we are, and will be able to talk about what’s in the area as we cycle the length of the UK.

As a British Cycle Ride Leader, cycling is my passion and it seemed the perfect fit to do what I love, whilst raising funds for Ward 130 to benefit the children we care for.  I see the children on the ward feeling anxious and stressed so with a brighter, more child friendly environment and some new equipment to help distract them and have fun.  I hope my fundraising will go towards making their hospital stay better.

Every penny donated though this Just Giving page will go directly to the ward.

About the charity
