At present there are an estimated 165,000 people suffering from an eating disorder in the UK and numerous more who aren't even known about.
At least 10% of these will die because of their mental health issues.
I'm one of the lucky ones.
Although I am now in recovery, I have lived with an eating disorder since the age of 10. I have never aspired to look like a supermodel or wear a size 0. But I have struggled with my confidence and low self-worth to the point of self-destruction. Sadly mine is not an uncommon story. There is a severe lack of awareness and misunderstanding of the seriousness of eating disorders and mental health issues in general. As I experience my own recovery I would like to see that change.
I have been directly affected by the lack of resources for support with eating disorders and have seen the immense pressure on NHS services. That's why it is so important to support charities working with people affected by these issues. Inspired by many people that I have met through I-EAT, I know that recovery is possible for everyone if they can learn new ways of managing lifes challenges. And this challenge is part of my recovery. I know that the key to my successful completion of this ultra will be to nourish and care for myself both physically and mentally, through good nutrition and a healthy approach to training.
I-EAT is a charity based in the South West of England where they help hundreds of people and families each year who are suffering from or affected by eating disorders. I would like to gather support and awareness for this incredible charity, so that it can reach out and help more people, perhaps just saving them or someone they love from being one of the 10%.
