Last summer brought a life changing event to our family. My husband, Charlie, was admitted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary on the last night of our family holiday, after experiencing stomach pains all day, which intensified as the evening progressed. Within 16 hours of admission, he was in surgery getting a tumour removed. It was like a bomb had been dropped when the surgeon told us the likely cause of the tumour... cancer.
Karen, the MacMillan Nurse was amazing. She was there for Charlie from very early on, providing him with much needed information and support, as he came to terms with what was happening. Karen was there to answer our questions in the weeks following, as we waiting for the results, and kept a link between Charlie and the Consultants after he was able to return home.
I didn't fully appreciate the value of the support that MacMillan provide cancer patients and their families until then. It would have been a much harder journey, for Charlie especially, without them.
Charlie is one of the lucky ones, and has made a great recovery. Now I would like to give something back to MacMillan to say thank you for helping him and our family, and help them keep up the great work that they do, and this is why I chose to run the Loch Ness Marathon, to raise funds for MacMillan.
