Story

Hi there!

Thank you for taking the time to visit this Just-Giving page to help us raise money for The British Hedgehog Preservation Society.

Hedgehogs are now a critically endangered species in the U.K. and need all the help they can get. Due to decreased inter connectivity between gardens, increased numbers of urban predators and increasingly busy roadways hedgehogs face more threats than ever before.

Founded in 1982 the BHPS continues to offer help and advice to those with sick, injured or orphaned hedgehogs and maintains a list of rehabilitators in the UK.  You can find more about the charity here: https://www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk/

Carol has been volunteering with hedgehog preservation over the last two years. Working closely with Suffolk Wildlife Trust Carol has been involved with a study in order to develop a new methodology in order to estimate hedgehog populations in urban environments. During the course of the study it became more and more apparent that the average person knows very little about hedgehogs and their plight. Increasingly the study became a chance for outreach in order to help people make small changes in order to help them thrive in their local area.

If you want to help hedgehogs in your garden at home think about access - can hedgehogs get in? Hedgehogs can squeeze through small holes, under gates and are great with reducing slug and snail populations. Also avoid using harmful chemicals - especially slug pellets - as these can kill hedgehogs. Thirdly consider leaving food, water and even a small hedgehog house in your garden. This will encourage your prickly friends in and may tempt them into staying! Avoid ponds and water features with sharp drop offs, whilst hedgehogs can swim, they can't climb very well - make sure there is an convenient stepping stone or a slope for easy hoggy access.

We'll have a load more information available at our reception for those interested - and for those who aren't convinced, rest assured the BHPS will use any money you can donate wisely in raising awareness and rehabilitating hedgehogs in need.
