In Lucy's memory we would like to fundraise to help grow awareness of the importance of Folic Acid before and during the early stages of pregnancy.
In June/July this year we found out we were expecting our third child. With so much excitement we shared the great news with Poppy and Blake after our 12 week scan. Their joy of expecting a new brother or sister was contagious!
Everything was fine throughout pregnancy but on 7th November at our routine organ screening scan we were told that our little one had Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, as well as other birth defects. At this point i was already 22 weeks pregnant. My world shattered into a million pieces. I few days later I had an MRI scan to determine the severity of the damage. It was explained that our baby had a huge hole in the base of the spine and a large amount of fluid already around the brain causing increased pressure. The consultant sat with us and explained the complications ahead for our little one whilst in the womb and later in life. We made the heart breaking decision to not continue with the pregnancy. A decision that both Darren and I both wish we didn't have to make. Telling my two children that mummy would be going to hospital because their baby was poorly but would not be coming home home with a baby is the hardest thing I have ever had to do.
In November I was admitted into hospital where our baby's heart was stopped and my labour was induce the day after. At this point I'm in a fog of complete sadness and overwhelmed by the emotions. On 21st November at 21.39 hours I gave birth to our beautiful ray of sun shine, Lucy weighing 1lb 2oz. What a beautiful little lady she is. We spent hours holding her and wondering what could have been. The midwives dressed her in yellow, she looked just gorgeous.
Your gift will make a huge impact on people and their families with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. Enabling them to providing support to families like they have to ours.
