When I was 14, my 12 year old sister went through surgery and radiotherapy for brain cancer. She never needed a wig, but she did lose some of her long dark hair. She is a stoic individual and has remained strong throughout the years of recovery, but the hair she lost never grew back.
12 years later, I have decided to shave my head for a charity that makes wigs for children, like my sister, who suffer hair loss as a result of cancer treatment. Because cancer or not, every child deserves to feel beautiful.
I will be donating my luscious locks to The Little Princess Trust, whose expert wigmakers will use my hair to make a wig for a child who has lost his or her hair through cancer treatment.
I'm aiming to raise at least £500 because:
If a suitable donated-hair wig cannot be sourced, then The Little Princess Trust buy in the most appropriate wig for the boy or girl in question, as close as possible to their original hair. The cost to the charity to purchase one wig is on average between £350-£500.
If we can surpass £750 then I will post a video of my head-shaving online!
About The Little Princess Trust:
As a result of treatment for cancer, most children will suffer hair loss as a side effect. Some boys and girls cope remarkably well but for others this can be very upsetting.
We work with specialist suppliers and experienced hairdressers who offer wigs tailored to the individual child’s needs to give the most realistic look and feel, as close as possible to their original hair. We strive to put parents/guardians in contact with suppliers as local as possible.
The Little Princess Trust is a children’s cancer charity and our mission is to supply real hair wigs to children suffering with cancer, for the duration of their treatment. However, in addition we assist children with other conditions which also result in hair loss, the most common being alopecia. Our commitment to these children is different. Despite being set up to help children with cancer, the Trust is able to supply children that do not have a cancer diagnosis with a single wig.
