What is Tough Mudder?
How do you like to spend your Sunday? We like nothing more than to tackle a muddy obstacle course with a great bunch of mates and make new friends along the way. The best way to sum up Tough Mudder is as a half marathon with a couple dozen obstacles thrown in for good measure. The obstacles themselves are a mixture of muddy, funny, cold (like REALLY cold, some might even say freezing), electric, and some of the names inspire curiosity and fear! Ranging from Arctic Enema 2.0, to Electroshock Therapy and, new for 2015, Cry Baby, there's something for everyone. And the best part of it is you get a deliciously refreshing beverage AND stylish headband at the end of it!

Despite all the above, however, the main reason Tough Mudder was chosen as our challenge is because of their ethos of teamwork and camaraderie. Out there on the course, nothing matters other than helping the man or woman next to you. Because of that alone, we can't think of a better event to symbolise the charity we’re doing this for.

KALEIDOSCOPE
Our chosen charity is The Kaleidoscope Trust. Their remit is to uphold the human rights of LGBT people around the world by engaging with lawmakers, ministers and authorities in the UK, Europe and across the Commonwealth (amongst others) to foster change and safeguard LGBT rights.

Did you know that it's illegal to be LGBT in over 78 countries around the world? People are at risk of being imprisoned, attacked by mobs or being sentenced to death because of wanting the freedom to love whoever they want to. We can sometimes get a bit jaded about gay rights given that we're lucky enough to live in a country where we have the freedom to be who we are, but the ongoing struggle around the globe is real. In January 2015 Russia banned trans people form having driving licences because the government considers being trans a 'psychological' disorder. And a bill was presented to lawmakers in Virginia, USA, that would have allowed anyone to openly discriminate against gay people (it fortunately didn't pass the vote!). Even now, closer to home, homophobic laws are being suggested. The DUP in Northern Ireland has proposed the introduction of a ‘conscience clause’ into equality laws which would allow businesses to refuse to serve LGBT people. So you see, the work that the Kaleidoscope Trust does is essential to ensure that discrimination continues to be stamped out because the sad truth is that the hatred is still rampant in so many corners of the world.
