Debbie, inspirational, devoted, extraordinary, funny, intelligent human being.
A hands on Mom who along with my Dad taught me and my brother a love and respect for all things living and always encourages us to exceed our potential.
She trained as an Occupational Therapist, and provided an excellent service for over 20 years to the NHS. She was awarded Occupational Therapist of the year TWICE! She has an incredible ability to sow and water seeds of ideas and see them grow into fruition way beyond the bigger picture. She believes in the power of the universe, to ask and it is given but she always asks for insight or outlook to better a situation.
She is currently living with the disease; Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) for several years. MSA is a rare complex, multifactorial, debilitating neurodegenerative disease that is often misdiagnosed and misunderstood. Symptoms include: tremors, slow movement, muscle rigidity, and postural instability, dysfunction and failure of the autonomic nervous system, loss of muscle coordination as well as difficulties with speech and gait. Some of these features are similar to those seen in Parkinson’s disease.
Currently there is no cure and no medication to slow down the progression.
This disease does not define her but limits her physical ability to do more. She has attended a palliative care program at St Mary’s Hospice.
Becoming a service user has given her an alternative perspective to the support offered. She has utilised this to advocate the care provided there. We would like to raise awareness and money for MSA and St Mary’s Hospice.
Debbie’s granddaughter Rose, 6 is very brave, determined, and loves adrenaline & excitement in her life. Her idol is Amelia Earhart who did many firsts for women in aviation. Rose wants to be the first 6 year old to complete a loop the loop challenge in a Slingsby Firefly; a two-seat aerobatic training aircraft. Making her the youngest participant ever for St Mary’s. She will be accompanied by her big sister and Debbie’s eldest granddaughter Grace.
Grace, 12 is smart, caring, and determined to provide a good quality of life for her Nan through great home cooked food, personalised care and conversation. She is a devoted granddaughter and NOT a born thrill seeker but wants to push her own comfort zones to raise awareness and money for both MSA & St Mary’s Hospice retrospectively.
