Story
This Branch of the MND Association is run entirely by volunteers who support people living with MND in South Buckinghamshire.
MND results in the death of about 5 people every day in the UK. There is no known cause and currently no cure. It is a degenerative neurological condition that leads to weakness and progressive wasting of muscles, causing increasing loss of mobility, and difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing. People with MND become progressively and often totally dependent on others for normal everyday activities. Death usually results from failure of the respiratory muscles, with life expectancy of eighteen months or so following diagnosis.
The money we raise is used primarily to help maintain as good a quality of life as can be made possible for those people living with MND within this area. We help with the funding of mobility aids and communications equipment not always readily available from the statutory services, by assisting with the costs of home modification and respite care and by helping with transport costs. We also contribute to the central funding of research into the cause of this devastating disease. The Association is entirely dependent on donations and receives no state support.
The Branch supports people living with MND, their carers and families through our trained Association Visitors who offer a befriending role, providing support, information, and an ongoing link with the Association.
