On Saturday the 6th of October 2012 I plan to walk the length of the Gloucester & Sharpness canal to raise as much money as possible for the British Heart Foundation in memory of my Dad, Mark Tanner. 

On the 18th of January 2011 my family's world came crashing down when my Dad suddenly dropped dead of a heart attack, he was 46 years old. Like many other families, I don't think we ever considered this could happen to him seeing as he was neither ill or old, but since his death I have found out that heart disease is infact the UK's biggest 'silent' killer. It is responsible for 88,000 people's passing each year, that's an average of 224 people a day.

My Dad was a very hardworking, active man who loved life and loved his work, he worked for British Waterways since he was 17 years old, which is why it is very fitting for me to walk the canal banks in his memory for such an amazing cause.

The money I raise will go towards the 'Mending Broken Hearts Appeal' which is a research programme where scientists are currently trying to unlock the secret of the Zebra fish. The Zebra fish can repair it's own heart. These fish are already providing vital clues about how we might mend human hearts. The BHF needs to spend 50 million pounds to fund this groundbreaking research that could literally 'mend broken hearts' in as little as ten years time.
