Our story

The School of Panto is a Performing Arts school based in Kent.

School of panto have created Heal The World. An isolation inspired cover of Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas!

The school were due to have their spring show on the 3rd May which has now been postponed. When the government announced the schools were being closed, the School Of Panto also closed, in line with this, until further notice. With 180 pupils disappointed that their show had been postponed, and in some cases, not fully understanding the reasons behind the current situation, I Chris Park - the School Of Pantos director, along with our musical director Katie Tustin, decided to record a song with the pupils remotely and edit this together in our home studios. We had previously been toying with the idea of recording this at Christmas but I wanted to bring it forward in these unprecedented times.

A number of pupils recorded solo lines on a voice memo through a mobile phone. These were then emailed to myself and Katie which she then edited together to create the overall sound. The difficulty in getting the vocals to line up, particularly on the chorus, was a challenge to say the least. Many hours of hard work went into this finishing product. The backing track was created from scratch, Katie and her partner Matt McCartney recording and triggering all the instruments themselves.

They went to work on the backing track and Katie recorded a guide vocal, which I then emailed out to all of the pupils with individual clips for them to learn their parts. I wrote some new lyrics to reflect the situation, and once the track was complete the vocals were added. The whole thing was mixed and then sent back out to the pupils so they could make individual videos at home, for us to edit together.

The rest of the school took part in their weekly challenge by creating a SOP 'Stay Home Save Lives' poster. A vast number of pupils took part in this and displayed posters in their windows. This footage was also used in the making of the video and we wanted to include as many of our pupils as physically possible.

Our NHS is unbelievable, far bigger and better than anything we could ever do. But we wanted to do something positive for our pupils and we wanted to make them feel like they had done something positive in return.

Our aim is to raise £1000 for the NHS which is obviously a drop in the ocean. But if these children feel like they can contribute something, then they will take a positive from this whole experience and remember what they did in this time. Even if it is a just a case of having a video to look back on years down the line then that is so special and something positive to remember this experience by.

Please share our video and any donations, no matter how big or small would be gratefully appreciated. We want to show the NHS how much we support and appreciate them.
