Story

Emma and Christine have both been diagnosed with and treated for oral cancer and now hope to help other patients like us and raise awareness of the disease. We both work in cancer research and are surprised about the lack of quality of research into oral cancer and would like to see this change!

The prevalence of oral cancer has risen 40% in the last decade, more than any other type of cancer in the last 25 years. In 2010 more people died from this disease than in road traffic accidents. It is becoming increasingly common in younger people, who are otherwise healthy and have none of the known risk factors.

Please come to our 'SATURDAY BONANZA!' and bring your friends!

It is on Saturday 9th Novermber 2013 10am-3pm at All Saints Church Halls, 10 Woodend Drive, Jordanhill, Glasgow G13 1GS.

We will be selling homemade cakes, coffee/tea and homemade Christmas cards. Also, we have a raffle with fantastic prizes, guess the weight of the cake and guess the number of sweets in the jar. All the money raised will be going to the Ben Walton Trust (BWT). You can find out more about the work of this charity and oral cancer at the event.

If you would like to support us, please come to the bonanza, donate money here or you can text ' EMCH99 £5 ' to 70070 to donate £5.

We are also involved in raising awareness for oral cancer, in particular Christine is hoping to help raise awareness of oral cancer with Glasgow University Dental and Medical students. We have been helping with a BWT event for oral cancer patients and their families. As many patients struggle with eating and do not have the opportunity to eat out, the BWT are organising a three course blended meal at a restaurant.

We have chosen to support the Ben Walton Trust as they:

> Work to raise awareness of the disease among the general public and health professionals - the BWT have worked to set up a BMJ learning module for doctors and dentists and been involved in setting up a SIGN, a set of guidelines medics should follow.

> Work to fund research - the BWT have funded studeis in the south east of England and in Scotland to find out about the and risk factor of oral cancer in young people.

> Work to encourage appropriate palliative care and help patients generally.

Thank you for your support!
