It is tragic to think that 17 children are lost prematurely every single day. I did not know this before we sadly lost baby Eddie at 21 weeks just 2 weeks ago. Finding out the news that we had lost our baby was literally devastating for both Kate and I and we will never forget the experience. The week of Eddie's birth was the hardest that I have experienced and there were so many raw emotions and difficult questions to deal with. However, the fabulous staff at the Royal Gwent Hospital highlighted Sands to us as a source of information and support at this extremely confusing time. Their online resources were invaluable at this time and they continued to support us once Eddie was born. Prior to 1978, and the establishment of Sands, parents like us would barely have been able to see their child after giving birth. However, thanks to the fundraising activities of Sands the hospital has been able to dedicate a special room in the maternity ward called the Butterfly Room. In this room Kate and I were able to spend a whole night with Eddie in his cold cot. Although this was nothing like we had planned, to have this space available meant so much to all of us. Sands continues to raise funds and conduct research in to why babies die prematurely and we found their support invaluable.
