Story

At 11:43 local time on 9th September 2008, I reached Kotlutangi, the southernmost point of Iceland. It had taken me 27 days and more than 650 kilometres to reach this point. In so doing, I became the first person to complete this longest north/south coast to coast crossing of Iceland.  To learn more about this trip, go to www.christophermike.com

My goal is to raise money for THE AFGHANISTAN TRUST, a very worthy cause with which I am deeply honoured to be associated. I am grateful to those of you who have also demonstrated your support of this cause and who have been so generous in making donations.

The Afghanistan Trust was formed on 15 March 2007, it was formed to help support the families and soldiers serving with the Parachute Regiment in Afghanistan and who have been wounded or killed as a consequence. All four Parachute Regiment infantry battalions together with other specialist airborne units have until very recently been serving in Afghanistan. No one needs to be reminded that these are the units at the front line of combat who have been taking the brunt of combat casualties.

The trust provides care and support that goes above and beyond that which is provided by central government. The overall objective is to make life as comfortable as possible for those who have given so much. It was given charitable status in November 2007, (registered charity number is 1121647) and since then has distributed financial aid to injured soldiers to help with mobility vehicles, to help provide accommodation for the families of those killed to attend remembrance services and also to help with transport costs for the families of those who have been seriously injured.

Its charitable objects are:

  1. The relief in need of soldiers of the Parachute Regiment injured in Afghanistan and families of soldiers of the Regiment killed or injured in Afghanistan by the provision of welfare services, support and financial assistance and such other charitable means as the trustees see fit.
  2. To promote the military efficiency of the Regiment by sustaining the memories of the loss of life and sacrifices made by the soldiers of the Regiment in Afghanistan by such charitable means as the trustees see fit.

As the Regiment continues its operations in Afghanistan the need for the fund will continue to grow as more soldiers are wounded or killed.

This is our opportunity to give them something back. It is ultimately a matter of personal choice but every personal donation, no matter how small, will make a significant difference.

Donating here ensures that the trust gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

About the charity

The Afghanistan Trust gives assistance to soldiers of The Parachute Regiment who were wounded in action, or the dependants of those killed in action in Afghanistan. It achieves this through financial and welfare support. It also sustains the memories of the loss of life and sacrifices made
