Story

This is the story of a special little boy and the reason we are taking part in the Great North Run.

The 4th September 2022 will mark the 2 year anniversary of Oliver being diagnosed with his Brain tumour.

At 4.30am on the 4th September 2020 Oliver came into his mum and dad's bedroom feeling unwell. His words were, my brain hurts!! Within an hour he was In and out of consciousness . An ambulance was called and he was quickly taken to Barnsley hospital for tests. A CT scan showed he had a bleed on the brain with a 'mass' behind. He was very quickly put in an ambulance and taken through to Sheffield Childrens hospital. He was sedated and given a detailed MRI. This showed how serious it was and they needed to operate immediately. The cancerous tumour was big and aggressive and although the surgery alone was very high risk, without surgery he wouldn't be with us much longer. It was almost a 10 hour operation but they successfully removed 80%. He woke up shortly after and his 1st words were, 'my brain doesn't hurt anymore' .

The surgery was preceded by months of radiotherapy and high dose isolation chemotherapy where he basically had to stay in his hospital room for months on end as he had no immune system.

10 months later and after every side effect you can think of, multiple surgeries, infections and procedures he went home to start recovering.  The tumour was shrunk by over 50% and stayed in a stable condition until June this year. Unfortunately the tumour has now returned and although they are doing everything they can for Oliver it is now palliative care.  The doctors and nurses at Sheffield childrens saved his life and gave us an extra 2 years and counting with him. They have become like a second family and we will never be able to thank them enough.

Friends, family and work colleagues have been so supportive and generous this past 2 years and without all of their love and support I dont know how we would have coped. This run will hopefully raise the profile of the amazing job these people do and raise a few quid to go towards the amazing work that this hospital does.

Thankyou for your continued support from Claire, David, our families and our superhero, Oliver xxx
