Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page in support of Radio Cham gi Wadu - a community radio initiative to be run by the  community, for the community and in the community. Cham gi Wadu in the Luo language means 'share with your neighbour'. The purpose of this much needed project is to combat poverty and promote sustainable development.
In recent years CM4K, which I set up 8 years ago, has been raising funds to provide equipment and training to enable staff and students at the University of Rongo to facilitate community media partnership with local communities.

It is well documented that community radio contributes significantly to community empowerment and socio-economic development through effective community communications; knowledge sharing and access to information relevant to community needs. For example impoverished poultry farmers might access information from a documentary or public information programme or from knowledge shared through a talk-in or a chat show in which details of how to build and maintain secure chicken coops in which poultry can be raised to live healthy, happy & productive lives that contribute to the socio-economic welfare of the farmers and their families.

Most of the population in Cham gi Wadu are poor and own small holdings upon which they depend for food. Frequently the community experiences low agricultural production conditioned by drought, low soil fertility, pests and diseases on their crops. Maize is a major staple food and cornerstone of their livelihood. The household’s resource endowment of the local community falls within the United Nation's vulnerable category. This vulnerability is exacerbated by limited access to relevant and timely information from various levels of government; extension offices and development agencies that would enable communities to gain access to solutions many of their problems.

The Cham gi Wadu community participants who are working with CM4K believe a community radio station can support and sustain the community's resilience to stem hunger and poverty through time of drought through sharing information and knowledge with their neighbours.
