In August 2013 I plan to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, which at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) is the highest free-standing mountain in the world.  This will be the most physically challenging project I have ever undertaken, and those of you who know me would be well justified in laughing with tears at this.  But I plan on getting up there, come hell or high water. 

My trek up Kili is entirely self-funded.  And I am selling each and every one of the 5895 meters I will climb to fundraise for Amani Children’s Home. This is an institution that provides primary care, counseling and outreach options to street children in Moshi, at the base of Kilimanjaro. 

Amani means “peace” in Swahili; and this is the name given to the home that shelters Moshi’s most vulnerable street children.  Their numbers have rapidly increased in the last few years due to poverty, the effects of HIV/AIDS and crumbling family structures.  Amani offers them a safe environment, where they can grow, learn, be treated for various psychological or physical afflictions, and perhaps even be reunited with their families.

Each metre that I will climb up Kilimajaro means a $1.00 donation to the Amani Children’s Home.  Every little bit helps.  Consider what your contribution can ensure these children:

•                $20 - Feeds one child for one month

•                $50 - Provides medical care for one child for one year

•                $150 - Pays complete primary school fees (tuition, fees, uniform, school lunch, etc.) for one child

•                $348 - Provides full care for one child for a year (school, clothing, food, medical care, and counseling)
