Story

This week we are raising money for Stokenchurch Dog Rescue this charity has been requested by Sheila Mitchell. Please find below a few words from Sheila about the charity.

I am a big dog lover, and recently acquired 2 more dogs which bring my numbers up to 6 (all rescue). One of my first rescue dogs, a Bichon Frise, came from Stokenchurch Dog RescueThe charity attempts to find suitable loving homes for dogs that have been found or surrendered to them.  Once a dog arrives at the rescue centre it is given a medical assessment and any treatment required is given. The dog will then stay in their newly refurbished isolation unit for 7-10 days to ensure it is fit and healthy.  During this time the staff are able to observe during walks and socialisation to assess its temperament. Sometimes dogs come to the rescue centre with particular behaviour issues, usually as a result of some traumatising experience in their past.

What can you expect from a dog? Unconditional love, devoted companionship, constant entertainment. Canine companions offer comfort and help alleviate stress and anxiety, looking in to their eyes raises your level of oxytocin also known as the “love hormone”. Did you know just petting a dog lowers blood pressure, heart rate, slows breathing and relaxes muscle tension?

The staff and specialist behaviourists work with the dogs and once assessed suitable training programs are set up to ensure the dog can be re-homed safely. Stokenchurch Dog Rescue is self–financing and all running costs of the charity are obtained through volunteers fundraising or the public donating. Like all charities Covid19 has had an impact on their fund raising
