Loving God,

you called your Son, Jesus to face the suffering and hardship of the cross. 

In following your Son, you call us to face suffering and hardship for the sake of the good news.

Help us to carry our cross with courage as we walk alongside others

filled with hope that our self-denial will lead to the joy of the resurrection. 

Amen

Halfway there, please join me for a prayer.

Heavenly God,

your Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness where he experienced need and temptation.

May your same Spirit drive us out of our places of comfort

and wake us up to the needs of those who suffer in destitution through debt and neglect.

Move us to be compassionate and willing to sacrifice our wants

and to be generous in sharing ourselves and our resources,

so as to satisfy the needs of others.

Amen
